This is officially the only "high concept" crochet book I have ever read. And what a concept! Regency-styled crochet designs, all based off of Jane Austen's books. It's a beautiful work, with lovely pictures and fun quotes from Jane Austen's novels and letters. I have the same complaint as another reviewer I read--there are a fair number of the patterns where you can't actually see the whole thing in the picture.
Is the collar actually terrible--is that why it's covered? Yes, the but-side of the This is officially the only "high concept" crochet book I have ever read. Yes, the but-side of the skirt looks great, but I would never take the time to crochet something if you won't even include a picture of what the front looks like.
My other complaint is that the table of contents only includes the general section headings Yes, you could find them in the index, but there's a whole ton of other things there too. The imaginary dialogues between Jane Austen and all her characters, at the start of each chapter, would probably do more for you if you had read all the novels.
If I checked this book out from the library again, these are the patterns I would be most interested in: -Carriage Blanket, page 57 one of those cool mesh patterns that you string other yarn through -Crocheted Pocketbook, page 72 I love the embroidery on this one, and my mom loved it too While I loved some of the outfits, I can't see myself ever actually making or wearing crocheted Regency-styled clothing.

The patterns don't seem difficult but I wouldn't advise the first time you use bamboo thread to be with a project in here. The crochet thread and yarn these patterns call for will be an investment. I practice on acrylic yarn. I also save the extra yarn at the end of projects for swatches and experimentation. Jul 05, Literary Detectives rated it really liked it Shelves: all-things-jane.
Very quirky. It's a lovely idea to regale the crocheting reader with stories of Miss Austen and her cacophonous characters. We know our Jane to have been a deft needlewoman - if you don't believe me, go and see the quilt she made with her mother and Cassandra at the Jane Austen's House Museum! The designs, too, are a perfect mix of Georgian and modern, and therefore eminently wearable. Jan 13, Laura rated it liked it Shelves: mr-bennet-s-library. I enjoyed the book more than the crochet patterns.
I loved that it is filled with excerpts of Austen's works, but I was uninspired by the designs. I've chosen to return the book to the library without making a single crocheted item.
Aug 30, Kerry rated it it was ok Shelves: get-creative , releases. Sadly I was not overly inspired by this book. Jul 31, Max rated it liked it Shelves: crochet-knit. Cute crochet patterns, though I found some of them to be a bit confusing.
Not for beginners! Mar 01, Kathryn rated it it was amazing Shelves: crochet , crochet-books. A charming concept that panders perfectly to the heart of any Austen fan.
The designs are inspired and creative, with beautiful photographs and sophisticated patterns and even hypnotising descriptions of each piece — ahhhh, "This cap, inspired by the classic Regency bonnet, is a modern take on a period design.
The wider-style brim protects your delicate skin while allowing you to play the coquette with ease [ Reading the proposition that Catherine take a homemade carriage blanket on a dicey trip or of Emma darting up to Lizzie and Knightley after realising her self sabotage in trying to matchmake them feels immersive and purposeful, not only providing us with some classical projects but also attempting to capture just a little bit of the intricacy, love, and consideration Jane invested in her heroines as she stitches and debates with her beloved creations.
This little manual felt so exciting and intimate, like it could have been ripped out of some Austenite zine or newsletter, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in Jane's books or even the regency era as a whole as a fun new way to do some crocheting! Jan 06, Cyndi Beane-Henry rated it it was amazing. Well written, with beautiful photography by Chris Hynes, this book provides fans of Jane Austen a chance to crochet beautiful Austen-like garments.
Crochet patterns are well written and easy to follow. Garments include pantaloons and vests, skirts, scarves, shawls, sweaters, hats and even young girls clothing. Sizes include several plus size garments for larger women. As a woman who adores this time era of clothing, I am in heaven trying to decide which garment I will make first! I can't wait to g Well written, with beautiful photography by Chris Hynes, this book provides fans of Jane Austen a chance to crochet beautiful Austen-like garments.
I can't wait to get started! I give this book Five Stars and a big Thumbs Up! I also give this my Highly Recommended Award! Jan 03, Cal rated it liked it.
I got this book largely because its 'preloved' price was tiny, and a quick flick through revealed nothing too ghastly. While I can only entertain making three of the designs without modification, others look like solid springboard designs. Currently making the military jacket as a more substantial hoodie I got this book largely because its 'preloved' price was tiny, and a quick flick through revealed nothing too ghastly.
Currently making the military jacket as a more substantial hoodie Fun to read and beautiful crochet patterns I liked the photographs of all of the crochet projects. It was fun that the projects were historically accurate but up to date. Jan 18, Kaylee Dolat rated it really liked it. Several of these designs look very promising and I'm excited to try them.
Some of the verbage could be broken down a bit better for beginning crocheters. Otherwise, a good guide. Aug 22, Dee rated it it was amazing. Charming, old-fashioned projects but wearable. My favorite is the one on the cover! And, the skirt with the back ruffle that looks like one's petticoat is showing. Apr 13, Laura rated it it was ok Shelves: crafting.
